Despite the onset of the digital age, old-school print magazines still find plenty of reverence among car enthusiasts from every walk of life. Few magazines are held in as high regard as Motor Trend, whose annual Car of the Year award is among the industry’s most-coveted acknowledgements of automotive excellence. This year, the award went to none other than the Tesla Model S. Here’s why.
The praise for the Tesla Model S begins at the very onset of the Motor Trend piece, with Angus MacKenzie gushing that the electric luxury sedan “…like a sports car, eager and agile and instantly responsive. But it’s also as smoothly effortless as a Rolls-Royce, can carry almost as much stuff as a Chevy Equinox, and is more efficient than a Toyota Prius. Oh, and it’ll sashay up to the valet at a luxury hotel like a supermodel working a Paris catwalk.”
MacKenzie goes on to note that in the 64 years of Motor Trend’s Car of the Year award, this is the first car to win that doesn’t have an internal combustion engine. This is both key to its success as the Car of the Year, and irrelevant, as MacKenzie notes the Tesla Model S “…is simply a damned good car that you happen to plug in to refuel.
The fact that Tesla Motors is an upstart automaker makes this award all the more impressive; few automakers have risen up to challenge the dominance of established players, and almost all have fallen by the wayside. Yet Tesla Motors has arguably built one of the best cars in recent history, and is now reaping the rewards of acknowledgement (as well as increasing sales).
If it seems like Motor Trend has been on a green kick lately, well, that’s because they have been. Last year they named the Chevy Volt as their Car of the Year, and Motor Trend’s own review of the Model S could be described as “glowing.” But awards alone do not a car company sustain, and Tesla really needs to start selling the Model S as fast as they can make them in order to recoup the hundreds of millions of dollars required to get this all-electric automaker off the ground.
But nabbing a Car of the Year award for your first all-original design? That’s a great way to kick off a car company, that’s for sure.
